How To Choose A Deadbolt Lock?

Deadbolt locks are probably the most common yet secure types of locks and there are different types and durability grades of deadbolt locks and you might need to research in order to understand which one is best for you.

Different Types of Deadbolts

When choosing deadbolt locks you can mainly choose from 2 types, single cylinder and double cylinder locks.

Single cylinder locks use a key on the outside and a a thumb turn moving part on the inside that you can turn to lock or unlock the door. They’re easier to use but it is not recommended if your door has a window because if someone break the glass he can then reach it and unlock the door.

Double cylinder locks need a key to unlock from both inside and outside. They’re more secure because even if someone breaks a window they can’t unlock the door from the inside. However their down side is in an emergency because you always need to use the key to get out and it might slow you down.

Different Grades of Deadbolt Locks

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has set standards that outline the security levels associated with deadbolt locks.

While ANSI Grade 1 offers the highest level of security grade 2 provides a sufficient security level which is usually enough for residential purposes. Grade 3 locks are considered the less secure and often being used for interior residential doors.

How to Choose the Right Deadbolts?

As we mentioned before ANSI Grad 3 is for interior doors like bathrooms and bedrooms. If you live in a quite safe gated community neighborhood an ANSI Grade 2 lock is quite sufficient for your home exterior doors. Nevertheless in a time when more people value increased security selecting a Grade 1 deadbolt lock is more common.
