Here are some easy steps you can take in order to keep your door locks in a great working condition that will make them last for many years.
Check out the door first
Sometimes a problem with the lock is because of the door that isn’t installed right which can make the lock work poorly or even break it. So if you’re having trouble with your lock check your door first. Make sure the door is properly set up straight because if it’s not it can put too much pressure on the lock and cause damage. It is recommended to have a professional locksmith inspection to pin point any door issues.

Clean the lock
Take a clean cloth and soapwater and clean the lock. You can use regular dish soap, mix it with water in a small bowl. Dip the cloth in the water wring it out and clean the lock. Be careful when you clean around the keyhole and make sure no water goes into it. Don’t use any harsh cleaners.

Lubricate the lock
To keep your locks working well it’s a good idea to lubricate them twice a year. This helps stop dirt and dust from clogging them up and jam them. There are different kind of lock lubricants to choose from but silicone based lubricants are the most recommended. When you use the oil on make sure to spray it into the keyhole so it can reach the internal parts of the lock.

Tighten the lock
Loose screws can cause the lock to misalign and make it difficult to turn the key, which can lead to more force being applied and the key breaking inside the lock.
